These gases act as a protective layer around the planet, preventing the escape of heat into space and thus maintaining a warmer temperature. Key greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, and water vapor (considered a "feedback" gas as it responds to temperature changes).

Scientists have determined that carbon dioxide plays a critical role in stabilizing Earth's atmosphere. If carbon dioxide were to be removed, the terrestrial greenhouse effect would collapse, leading to a significant cooling of Earth's surface by approximately 33°C (59°F).
